We were very happy that Daniel's parents, Allen and Sandra, arrived safely in Cherbourg after a long trip involving cars, planes, subways, and trains. It was an unusually beautiful day in Cherbourg, so we visited the harbor before taking them home to Vauville, and dinner from the grill. The next day was cloudy and rainy, so we visited the La Cité de la Mer (a large maritime museum downtown) where we saw a canon from the C.S.S. Alabama, a confederate vessel sunk off the coast of Cherbourg during the American civil war! (It's a small world after all). Edouard Manet painted the war scene (see below), and I found it on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSS_Alabama. We also enjoyed a roadtrip around the Cap La Hague and exploring the little town of Goury and its lighthouse.
